THE ENTREPRENEURIAL EXPERIENCE

Startup Pirates is not an event. It is a whole experience for life.

In this one-week program, our pirates dive in the startup world and have the opportunity and the tools to develop a business idea from scratch.

But if you think Startup Pirates is only about developing one idea, think again. This is a whole experience, the ultimate entrepreneurship trial, the entrance to a unique and exclusive worldwide community of change-makers and the boost you've been waiting for.

We gather the most promising aspiring entrepreneurs and fearless experienced guests to share and learn together in a combination of workshops, mentoring, inspirational moments and some wild surprises.

Son of a tailor I am; But no Sailor I shall be; I’d rather love Rum than the Great wild sea; You see, dealing with the fog; Or the stormy waters; It is no easy task; As In the wild sea monsters do live; Ships do sink; Good old sailors see their minds lost; Therefore I am; On the pirates Bay; Looking at the stars, listening what they say; Routing is a craft; From all the ones I know best; I am no sailor; But ARRRR!!!! Pirate I shall be.

Mentor

Hunter Spears Halder, suddenly 61 years old,is a graduate in History and Geography from East Carolina University, in Greenville, North Carolina (USA). He has taken a wide range of career paths over the years, from restaurant/ night club owner and concert promoter to demolition specialist and construction boss (among others) in the United States. In Portugal, after initially working as an English teacher, he became a team builder, designing and conducting many dozens of original formative and transformative teambuilding experiences – interventions focused on changing attitudes, behaviours and competencies in key populations. In 2010 he decided to the change careers yet again, this time abandoning the 2ª sector (for profit) in favor of the 3º sector (not-for-profit) with the modest ambition of changing the world. It was during the process of elaborating a number of original humanitarian projects that the idea for the Re-food Project was born. Due to favourable conditions (and increased urgency), Re-food was launched in the beginning of 2011 (leaving the other projects to be launched in due time). The Re-food Project began activity on the 9th of March, 2011 with the following objectives: to end food waste and end urban hunger while building Community Solidarity in the areas where the project is implanted. Its action is always micro-local, but its mission is to multiply planet wide. Re-food 4 Good – A non-profit, social solidarity association was formed on the 18th of July, with the mission to expand the project (and its benefits) to the largest possible number of people. The second cell is opening in Telheiras/Lumiar in September, initiating the second stage of the project:Lisboa 100%, a concentrated effort to replicate the project throughout the city, ASAP. Our intention is to make Lisbon the first city in the world to end food waste and feed its hunger people (by 2014) and then to “franchise” the project worldwide.

Penelope is and feels like an eternal student. Passionate about almost everything she soon discovered the beauties of answering questions with new questions. Her nomadic life between various cities in Portugal, Germany and USA gave her a freedom of thought and spirit of discovery. A tremendous curiosity about all there is, from the factual explanation of science to the subjectivity of the human behaviour, she could only go one path, the creative one. As in the sum of it all. She worked as an advertising photographer for several years after taking the master degree of Photography in Stuttgart, Germany. Later on she does a post graduation in advertising at the known as best advertising school in the world, Miami Ad School, starting in Hamburg and ending up in New York City. In Portugal since the beginning of this year and after going through some other advertising agencies in both Hamburg and NYC, she’s now a creative atJWT Lisbon. And happy as a bird to be back.

Ana Saramago

Speaker

CEO and Founder of HARDCORE FOFO was born in Crato  47 years ago, and works in IT services since 1987, at Portugal Telecom. Restless and curious  by nature, in 2010 she decided to join the internacional movement of subversive cross stitching and started to rearrange traditional patterns of  Old Vintage embroidery combining them with modern design clothing that show messages with a content that reinforces her rebel side and, at the same time, her sweet  personality. Enjoys photography, painting, music, design, street art, and all good things in life!!! Self-taught in life, with peculiar creativity, she believes there are such things as unicorns, blue fairies hanging on the lamps in the streets and flying carpets made in needlepoint. She believes life lasts two days and must be lived to the fullest. She likes challenges, the famous pastel de nata (custard tarts) and lying on the grass (when she can find it). Go with the flow is her favorite motto .

But the pass is not the same as the future, so listen to you own voice, and don’t let yourself be confused by the opinion of others.

I’m not your average marketing manager. I tried to be one, I was one but I was not happy. After working for 10 years in marketing, I found that you should do what you love, what drives you and what makes you, YOU. I do love brands, I truly love marketing, I really love (good) design and I love (passionate) people, to connect with them and feel something.  Now this is what I do: I work with brands (and people) to make them realize their full potential. I’m flying solo now, setting my own pace and working with the brands (and people) that truly believe in.

Lina Figueira

Ahoy Pirates! My name is Lina and during my life I’ve experienced different ways of learning and teaching. First as a primary teacher, a wonderful experience that teach me that in life, we should always make things with joy, passion, not being afraid to make it different, try new approaches, always learning, see the world colorful and most important always “keeping it simple”. Later on, as a consultant and trainer I use the same principles with adults, using creativity and innovation to solve problems and implement change. Recently, I´ve been feeling the call of social causes…and that´s what I want to focus on! I´m looking forward to meet the rest of the crew!! “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one…”

Miguel Ferreira

Inspired by an awesome pirate called Derek Sivers, I’m a pirate who is no longer saying “yes” to projects I’m only kind of interested in – it’s either “HELL YEAH” or “no.” Now that’s a great pirate mantra to live by -”HELL YEAH” or “no.” As Grace Hopper one day said: “A ship in a port is safe but that’s not what ships are built for.” So sail out to sea and do what you love. Work on awesome projects you believe in and be passionate about everything you do, but don’t commit to anything that doesn’t make you say Hell Yeah. Arrr!

Rui Gil

Arrr, me hearty! This pirate has only one leitmotiv in life… If you’re not dreaming your future, you’re already dead! Doesn’t matter, that you’re still breathing… Zombies can breathe! His dreams have taken him to all the continents, and most of the seas. They have pushed him to sail with storms, dive with sharks, fly with birds, and drink magic potions with xamans in the Amazon forest. This pirate is still hungry and addicted to life, as when he started, and he will keep searching his treasure, or die trying… Arrrrr !

Startup Pirates Lisboa 2nd Edition - The experience

Startup Pirates asked us to write about the experience of organizing the 2nd edition of Startup Pirates @ Lisboa. We did that and also a small video that shows what happened in that week.

“Gratitude is a feeling that should guide us through the true meaning of live” – This edition of Startup Pirates was very special. We became a family, and a truly strong one, whose roots are deep in the earth and filled with love. There were several dilemmas and arguments, but at the same time there were many accomplishments, conquests and victories, all of this because of the simplicity and friendship that unites us.

The participants were the main catalysts for this adventure of testing our limits and abilities so everyone could feel the joy of being part of a collective and of showing their true pirate spirit. A pirate has to be fierce, a warrior full of character. When a pirate finds an obstacle he won’t stop until he surpasses that same obstacle and learns some from it, earning that way a special medal.

These conquests and victories weren’t just achieved in 8 days. They were accomplished throughout the 6 months it took us to prepare everything – from the very beginning with a small idea until the final days when everything was finally ready and we felt that nothing had been left behind. We are not the best. We are what we are – pirates – and, truth be told, the feeling of gratitude is printed in our soul. Mission accomplished!
